Product Description

Hemp Oil Wood Finish for Furniture

Our Hemp Oil Wood Finish is pressed straight from industrial hemp plants and goes on smoothly without needing any solvents or thinning. It soaks into the wood easily, drying to a soft matte finish that brings out the natural color and character of your piece.

It’s food contact safe, hypoallergenic, and completely THC-free, so you can feel good about using it on kitchen items like cutting boards, wooden spoons, or butcher blocks. It also works beautifully on furniture, floors, or over milk and chalk paint when you want to refresh an older finish.

Hemp Oil for furniture isn’t as tough or water-resistant as our Pure Tung Oil, but it’s perfect for lightly used items where you want a natural, eco-friendly finish.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Just don’t use it on leather—it’s a drying oil and will cause leather to crack over time.

Directions

There are four phases when it comes to using Hemp Oil for wood projects.

  1. Preparation
  2. Application
  3. Curing
  4. Maintenance
  • Apply Hemp Oil when temperatures are above 50°F (10°C)
  • Clean the surface so it’s free of dust, dirt, and grime
  • If sanding, stop at 220-grit for proper absorption
  • Use Soy Gel: Paint and Urethane Stripper if stripping is needed
  • For a darker finish, use water- or alcohol-based stains before applying hemp oil
  • Avoid oil-based stains and wood conditioners, as they block absorption

When applying Hemp Oil on raw wood, here’s a handy thing to remember: Apply, Absorb, Repeat or Remove

  1. Apply – Apply the Hemp Oil to the surface.
  2. Absorb – Let the oil absorb into the material.
  3. Repeat – Do what you just did, apply the oil, and let it absorb.
  4. Remove – When the oil isn’t absorbing and pooling on the surface, remove it with a rag.
  1. Apply Hemp Oil with a lint-free cloth, such as an old t-shirt.
  2. Wipe onto the surface liberally
  3. Allow oil to soak into the surface for 40 minutes.
  4. Wipe off any excess oil that may be on the surface.
  5. Allow Hemp Oil to cure for 7 to 10 days before use.

For the best results, allow the first coat of Hemp Oil to soak in and rest overnight. The next day, add one or two additional coats, applying them the same way as the first.

One of the best parts about a Hemp Oil finish is how simple it is to maintain. Just clean with mild soap and warm water (avoid harsh chemicals, acids, or strong solvents).

How often you’ll need a touch-up depends on use. Heavily used pieces may need fresh coats more often, while others hold their look for longer. You’ll know it’s time when the surface starts looking dry or dull compared to when you first applied the finish.

For a maintenance coat, there’s no need to sand again.

  • Hemp Oil for furniture has a long shelf life and will last for years when stored properly.
  • Always tighten the lid to prevent air from entering the container.
  • Keep the bottle in a cool, dry place at a moderate temperature.
  • Avoid freezing, which can cause the natural fats to separate.
  • Keep away from excessive heat, which may cause the oil to cure inside the bottle.

Not sure which oil works best for your wood species? Our handy infographic makes it easy. Just find your wood type in the guide to see the recommended oil. For species not listed, you can use the Janka Scale to match a similar wood.

How Much Hemp Oil Do You Need?

How Much Finishing Oil You'll Need

The calculator estimates how much oil you’ll need. The commonly recommended amount of coats for adequate protection and saturation is between 3 and 5. However, your project may absorb more or less oil as there are many variables for each project. This is intended for estimation purposes only. This calculator estimates results, and coverage per gallon may vary depending on factors like species of wood, age of wood, protection needed, etc.

Most surfaces require Pure Tung Oil or Dark Tung Oil to be thinned. Our Half & Half, Dark Half, and Outdoor Defense Oil are pre-thinned options. Hemp Oil does not need thinning. If you do choose to thin the oil yourself at a 50/50 ratio, simply take the estimate in gallons above and divide it in half. One half will be the amount of oil needed and the other half will be solvent.
For example, if the calculator says you need 4 gallons, but you wish to thin it yourself. Then we recommend purchasing 2 gallons of the Pure or Dark Tung Oil and purchasing 2 gallons of a solvent or thinner like Citrus Solvent or Odorless Mineral Spirits.

Thinning Oils

  • Pure Tung Oil and Dark Tung Oil usually need to be thinned.
  • Pre-thinned options include Half & Half, Dark Half, and Outdoor Defense Oil.
  • Hemp Oil does not require thinning.
  • If thinning yourself at a 50/50 ratio, split the total estimate from the calculator in half—half oil, half solvent.
  • Example: If you need 4 gallons total, purchase 2 gallons of Pure or Dark Tung Oil and 2 gallons of Citrus Solvent or Odorless Mineral Spirits.

Hints & Tips

  • Hemp Oil finish can be applied to any porous surfaces.
  • Hemp Oil is also a great wood finish restorer. It can repair worn wood finishes just by simply wiping it onto the surface of the wood.
  • Hemp Oil is especially useful for sealing and protecting wooden kitchen items such as cutting boards, wooden utensils, wooden bowls, and the like!
  • When applying Hemp Oil over a milk painted surface, we recommend buffing the surface with a soft cloth prior to application of the oil. This will help remove any loose pigments from the surface.
  • The number of coats of oil to be applied will be determined by the intended use of the piece. One to two coats are enough for decorative work, paneling and molding. For surfaces that receive moderate to heavy use or handling need a minimum of three and on up to six coats for maximum protection. Hemp Oil is best used for lightly to moderately used items. Pure Tung Oil is more durable and thus should be used for surfaces expected to get heavy use.
  • Apply till the surface reaches the saturation point. This will be evident as the surface will not absorb more oil.
  • Do not get hung up on the number of coats, let the wood tell you when it has reached its maximum saturation.
  • The Hemp Oil will be in the wood up to the surface not on the wood surface like varnish or polyurethane topcoat. The end result is more like seasoning a cast iron pan. This product will give you a surface that will stand up to use and spills: water will bead on the surface.
  • Renewal and/or maintenance coats are thinly applied with cheesecloth, lint-free cloths (old bed sheets work well), or old t-shirt material on an as need be basis.
  • After the Hemp Oil has completely cured (minimum 30 days) cleaning of the surface can be done using hot water and mild soap, such as dish soap. Avoid using hard chemicals or acids for cleaning.
