Soapstone Sealer: All Natural Surface Protector

Finally, a truly all-natural, earth-friendly sealer for soapstone and other porous surfaces. The Soapstone Sealer by RMP Finishes enhances and protects countertops without harsh chemicals or the constant reapplication that mineral oil requires. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and any natural stone finish. Perfect for use on materials such as; soapstone, marble, granite, slate, concrete, natural stone slabs, and honed (un-polished) surfaces.

Choosing our Soapstone Sealer means choosing lasting protection, natural ingredients, and effortless maintenance. Here’s what makes it stand out:

  • Vegan & Eco-Friendly
    • 100% plant-based ingredients that are safe for both your home and the environment.
  • No VOCs or Harsh Odours
    • Free from solvents and volatile organic compounds, ensuring a safer indoor application.
  • Food-Safe Finish
    • Approved for use on kitchen countertops and cooking surfaces without risk of contamination.
  • Low-Lustre, Non-Fading Finish
    • Enhances the natural beauty of soapstone and other stones without adding unwanted gloss.
  • Heat-Resistant Protection
    • Withstands everyday kitchen temperatures without breaking down or discolouring.
  • Long-Lasting & Easy Maintenance
    • Cures naturally to create a durable surface that doesn’t require frequent reapplication.
  • No Sticky Residue
    • Unlike mineral oil, the drying oil formula cures fully, preventing transfer or smudging.

Step-by-Step Directions

1. Prepare the Surface

  • Ensure your countertop is unfinished, honed, and absorbent.
  • If it was previously coated with mineral oil or any glossy finish, clean thoroughly using hot water and mild dish soap or RMP Finishes Citrus Solvent™.
  • Let the surface dry completely before applying.

2. Apply the Sealer

  • Scoop a small amount of Soapstone Sealer onto a lint-free cloth and rub it over the surface in thin, circular motions until evenly covered.
  • Allow it to soak in for 15–30 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth, applying firm pressure for a smooth, even finish.

3. Let It Cure

  • Leave the surface to sit overnight, then allow 5–7 days of curing time before regular use.
  • For best results, keep the area free from standing water and objects to maintain airflow.
  • Full cure occurs within 10–15 days, creating a durable, low-lustre finish.

4. Maintain the Surface

  • Clean using mild soap and water only, and avoid acids or harsh cleaners.
  • Reapply in high-use areas as needed; low-traffic zones may stay protected for years.

For Soapstone Sinks and Basins:

Follow the same steps, allowing a minimum 10–15-day curing period before use for optimal water resistance and even protection.

Our Soapstone Sealer covers most surfaces with one coat. However, for a new or unfinished stone surface, two coats may be necessary. The coverage for each Soapstone Sealer size is

  • 4 oz ≈ 50 sq. feet
  • 8 oz ≈ 100 sq. feet
  • 16 oz ≈ 200 sq. feet

To best calculate how many square feet you’ll need to seal, follow these simple steps.

  1. Find the length and width of your countertop in inches. (Split complex or L-shaped counters into smaller rectangles and measure each separately).
  2. Multiply the length by the width to get the total square inches.
  3. Divide that number by 144 to convert it into total square feet.
  4. Multiply your total square feet by the number of coats you plan to apply (usually two (2) coats for proper sealing on unfinished stone).
  5. Compare your final number to the coverages above to estimate how much you need.

Can I use Soapstone Sealer on polished stone?

No. The sealer is designed for honed or raw porous surfaces. Polished stone won’t absorb the product properly, so it’s best suited for matte or unfinished finishes.

How often should I reapply Soapstone Sealer?

Most surfaces stay protected much longer than a traditional mineral oil treatment. However, in areas of frequent use (like around sinks or prep zones), you can reapply a thin coat as needed to refresh the protective layer. Typically, a light annual refresh is common.

What makes this different from mineral oil?

Mineral oil is a non-drying petroleum product that fades over time and can transfer onto other surfaces – including food!). The Soapstone Sealer, by contrast, is a drying oil and wax blend that cures naturally, creating a durable, non-toxic, long-lasting finish.

Will the Soapstone Sealer eventually go rancid?

No. The walnut oil used in the sealer is a drying oil, meaning it reacts with oxygen to polymerize and cure (harden). It forms a tough, durable, and cured finish long before it has a chance to spoil or go rancid, ensuring a stable and long-lasting protective layer.

Does it change the color of the stone?

The Soapstone Sealer enhances the natural depth and richness of your stone without creating an artificial shine. The result is a subtle, low-lustre finish that highlights the stone’s organic beauty.

Ingredients

At RMP Finishes, we believe in full transparency. You deserve to know exactly what’s in every product you use in your home, and our Soapstone Sealer is made from just a few safe, natural ingredients you can trust.

Made with:

  • Walnut Oil – FDA-approved for food-contact surfaces, this natural drying oil penetrates deeply to protect and enrich stone.
  • T1 Carnauba Wax Flakes – A plant-based wax that adds a subtle sheen and durable topcoat without synthetic additives or petroleum.

About Walnut Oil and Allergies

We understand that some customers may have concerns about walnut oil and allergies. While no product can be guaranteed to be completely risk-free, polymerized walnut oil used in our formula has a very low likelihood of causing allergic reactions.

Here’s why:

  • Allergic responses are typically triggered by proteins, which are minimal or inactive in polymerized walnut oil.
  • During manufacturing, the oil is heated and cured, a process that helps neutralize any residual proteins.
  • Once applied and cured, the oil polymerizes into a solid, inert finish, further reducing any potential for sensitivity.

If you have a severe nut allergy, we recommend consulting your physician before using this or any product containing walnut derivatives.
